Holistic Dentistry

More and more people and health professionals in technologically advanced countries in the western world are taking increased interest in, and recognizing the efficacy of, alternative medical techniques and health care procedures. In the same stream, the spread of holistic dentistry can be noticed in many countries. This type of dentistry combines dental knowledge with procedures from a variety of medical systems that are designed to improve a person’s oral health. The approach is not confined to only one area of a person’s body, but it takes into consideration patient’s overall health. Therefore, instead of focusing solely on a patient’s teeth, holistic dentists are concerned about the relationship between a person’s mouth and the rest of their body.

In relatively new terminology, also known as alternative dentistry or biological dentistry, holistic dentistry promotes a preventative approach to dentistry.  Rather than dealing with dental concerns as they pop up, holistic dentists use techniques that are designed to avert common dental problems like tooth decay, tooth disease, and tooth loss. Holistic dentists note the consequences of traumas in the layout of the teeth and the jaws along with their associated oral tissues. Crooked teeth are looked at as the body’s way of showing that the underlying bone structures are somehow out of balance and therefore need to balance the teeth within the facial bones, head, neck, shoulders, back, pelvis and limbs. Further, with regard to orthodontic dentistry, holistic dentists will use a practice known as orthopedic orthodontics in which they will ensure that the muscles of the patient’s face and the patient’s head and neck are properly aligned.  By engaging in this practice, holistic dentists are not simply limited themselves to treating an oral condition but are creating preventative solutions to problems that may affect the patient’s jaw, head, neck, and spine. In order to arrive at an accurate diagnosis, detailed information may be needed from the patient. This would include several x-rays to see the intricate relationships in the oral region.

Ayurveda is one of the best hopes in the holistic dentistry. This Indian system of medicine is nearly 5000 years old. Ayurveda treatment in India is one of the great gifts of the sages of ancient India to mankind. This Indian system of Ayurvedic medicine is the oldest herbal method among all methods of science. Ayurvedic herbs have nature's own power of remedies. The right herb in the right combination keeps the body system in harmony.  Many people come with the aim of Ayurveda treatment and tourism in India. Ayurveda doctors (Ayurvedacharya) & herbalists have developed unique Formulated Herbal Tooth Powders for effective and safe treatment of the number of diseases based on ancient system of traditional mixture of Ayurveda herbs. These ingredients are combined in such a way that helps in cleaning of teeth, prevention from various dental problems such as dental pain, bleeding gums, mouth fibrosis due to poor eating habits or betel nut chewing habits, poor dental root, tingling tooth, tobacco chewing habits, dental numbness, formation of tartar, poor dental strength.

Power of Neem
This part of the Indian continent is full of Neem tress. Who knows better use of Neem than an ordinary India? Many Ayurvedic formulations are prepared using it as dominant ingredient.  It could be in the form of Herbal Toothpaste or herbal tooth powder making it a unique and powerful oral care formula containing active botanicals such as supercritical extracts of Neem Bark and Leaf, Grape seed, Clove, Fennel and other plants for maximum support of healthy gums and teeth. The herbal Neem toothpastes that avoid the use of common “unnatural” ingredients like lauryl sulfate, saccharin, parabens, artificial colors, artificial flavors or fluoride serve the purpose better. One of the interesting common sights in India is the morning walkers chewing on Neem twig, traditionally a preferred method for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. The bark and the sap within the twig are known not only for their cleaning ability but also for protecting the mouth. Such is its prominence in Indian society, that many researchers believe that these Neem twigs have helped rural Indians avoid cavities, despite limited access to modern dental care.

Approach of holistic dentistry:

  • The approach of Holistic dentistry is open-minded to changes that amalgamation of allopathic stream of treatment and alternative health care might bring working together for the overall benefit of the patients.
  • Holistic dentistry approach is to adopt modality of understanding body constitution as a whole rather than just a set of teeth and jaws.
  • Holistic dentistry puts equal emphasis on nutrition as may be essential.
  • Holistic dentistry recognizes the fact that the mouth impacts the overall health of a person.
  • Holistic dentistry approach is to also remove the toxins when teeth are removed so these don’t become underlying causes of diseases in oral region or elsewhere in the body system.
  • Holistic dentistry approach is to use biocompatible root fillings than adopting root therapy as traditionally done under the present system.
  • The understanding in holistic dentistry is to avoid the use of mercury amalgam fillings.  The biocompatibilities of the different tooth filling composite resins of non toxin category are used.
  • Holistic dentistry welcomes the use of alternative medicines in Ayurvedic, Homeopathic remedies, or any other to help our patients, with express understanding of its established efficacy.
  • Proper nutrition and healthy eating habits are common in all health care systems. But Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, and others instruct the total avoidance of certain foods in a particular condition. But other time same foods may be allowed in day time but not at night, or vice versa, as essential to oral health in particular and overall health in general.
The knowledge and understanding in Holistic approach in treatments is an ongoing process.
