Osseous surgery procedure is designed to restore the bone and gum tissue destroyed in periodontal disease. Osseous Surgery is performed by your Periodontist at India dental clinics to modify and reshape deformities in the alveolar bone surrounding the teeth. The "pockets" formed around the teeth become deeper, and these are more difficult for you and your dental care professional to clean. So, it's important for you to reduce them with osseous surgery. This procedure is often used to treat bone loss around multiple teeth. The goal of the periodontics is to re-contour bone and tissues so that they are amenable to periodontal health and to allow for increased access for plaque control by the patient.
As a preparatory step before your surgical appointment, you need to undergo periodontal scaling and root planing. You are also expected to maintain a good level of oral hygiene. In some cases where the craters or "holes" in the bone are too deep, bone grafts will be used to fill them in. Bone is removed in certain areas to restore the normal rise and fall of the bony cup, but at a lower level. The gums are then placed back over the remaining bone and stitched in place. As advances in periodontology have been made, use of a special membrane (Guided Tissue Regeneration procedure) to cover over the bone graft has become possible. There are 2 types of membranes currently being used, resorbable and non-resorbable. The average surgical procedure takes about 1 hour, including the time to get numb. Resorbable barriers are used more frequently, but some of them may resorb prior to the length of the time needed for optimal bone fill. Autografts utilize the patient’s bone, which can be obtained from intra-oral or extra-oral sites. They are the best materials for bone grafting. Allografts are obtained from another human source, typically highly processed bone powder from human cadavers. The age and health of the donor can affect the rate of bone regeneration. Xenografts are obtained from animal sources; usually cows and/or pigs. They include processed animal bone or growth proteins.
This osseous surgical procedure is performed using local anesthesia like Lidocaine or Novocain. There is hardly any discomfort felt during the procedure, or it is somewhat similar to what you feel at thorough teeth cleaning. The post surgical pain medications often provide reasonable relief. It is very important for you to keep your mouth as clean as possible while the surgical site is healing. This means you should brush and floss the rest of your mouth normally. If the surgical site is not covered by a periodontal pack, you can use a toothbrush to gently remove plaque from the teeth. Antimicrobial mouth rinses containing chlorhexidine are commonly prescribed after periodontal surgery. Although these rinses do not remove plaque from the teeth, they kill bacteria and help your mouth heal. |
